A common issue in psychiatry is boundaries. Most of our patients either have none, or over do it. Each patient is different, so there isn’t really a set of diagnoses who adhere to one extreme or the other, although there are some trends. The kids that tend to hang out with us the longest, however, have [...] Part of working in psychiatry is the inevitable toll it will take on yourself. Transference, counter transference, not to mention all of our own defense mechanisms being thrown at us one by one. And not even beginning to touch on the truth coming from the mouths of babes on harsher tongues than our own. So I went to a MYTHICAL MUSIC THERAPY CONFERENCE. It was freaking awesome. It also made me realize that probably one of the biggest factors separating me from my kids is my capacity for self care. I packed my bags and jetsetted to XXXXXXXXXX because I knew I needed to. I knew I needed to recharge, [...] Practice makes perfect. I will never ever be perfect. I never ever practice. I did an assessment today and actually had written a little song for it the day before. I had all intentions of rehearsing said song prior to the actual assessment, but it just never happened until 10 minutes before. I had another song that [...] Dr. White knew this was coming. Dr. White has been listening to me obsess about the merits of the circus for the past 30.5 hours. (yes, I only counted to appear more crazy than I am.)One of the awesome perks of my job is that I get to take my patients on trips. The trip [...] Lots of people are of the opinion that those who work in psychiatry are generally there because deep down, they know something is wrong with them. My response to that, is who doesn’t have something wrong with them? And secondly, who is to say this thing and that thing that makes me different from your every [...] I absolutely adore the patient part of my job. I hope that comes across. I apologize but this is going to be a very vague rant that I pray does not throw anyone off the course of being a Music Therapist. There are people in psychiatry who are effing crazy.
